3 Easy Books for Everyone

I often get asked for gift recommendations for birthday or baptism presents. These are my top 3 general books I give away and endorse. In one sense they’re easy and very encouraging… but in another sense, they’re not easy at all. They are each confronting, challenging, and convicting.

Each of these great authors are trustworthy theologians and very gifted in their fields. Jerry Bridges is known for his books on Sanctification, Kevin DeYoung for his teaching on the Doctrine of Scripture and Francis Chan for his bold exhortation of Christians.

These are excellent books written in simple language – linguistic art at its finest.

1. Growing Your Faith – Jerry Bridges

“When we are gripped by the astonishing fact of Christ’s love for us, we want to draw close to Him and worship Him. But what can we do to deepen our relationship with Jesus? What does He expect of us? And how can we be more like Him? Navigator author Jerry Bridges presents the essential elements of Christian life in a highly readable, practical form that men, women, and teens can enjoy. Learn how to:

  • Feed your spiritual life by taking in the Scriptures
  • Rely on the Holy Spirit in obedience and prayer
  • Trust God during the trials of life
  • Contribute your unique spiritual gifts to serve others

These essentials of the Christian faith can help you disciple others.”

2. Taking God at His Word – Kevin DeYoung

“Can we trust the Bible completely?
Is it sufficient for our complicated lives?
Can we really know what it teaches?

With his characteristic wit and clarity, award-winning author Kevin DeYoung has written an accessible introduction to the Bible that answers important questions raised by Christians and non-Christians. This book will help you understand what the Bible says about itself and the key characteristics that contribute to its lasting significance.
Avoiding technical jargon, this winsome volume will encourage you to read and believe the Bible—confident that it truly is God’s Word.”

3. Crazy Love – Francis Chan

“God is love. Crazy, relentless, all-powerful love. Have you ever wondered if we’re missing it? It’s crazy, if you think about it. The God of the universe–the Creator of nitrogen and pine needles, galaxies and E-minor–loves us with a radical, unconditional, self-sacrificing love. And what is our typical response? We go to church, sing songs, and try not to cuss. Whether you’ve verbalized it yet or not…we all know somethings wrong. Does something deep inside your heart long to break free from the status quo? Are you hungry for an authentic faith that addresses the problems of our world with tangible, even radical, solutions? God is calling you to a passionate love relationship with Himself. Because the answer to religious complacency isn’t working harder at a list of do’s and don’ts–it’s falling in love with God. And once you encounter His love, as Francis Chan describes it, you will never be the same. Because when you’re wildly in love with someone, it changes everything.”
